The Excalibur Hotel and casino is a well known Las Vegas hotel, located on the Las Vegas Strip and owned and operated by MGM Mirage. The hotel uses the Arthurian theme in many ways: the exterior is a stylized image of a castle and is based on the castle in France.
The hotel is linked by overhead pedestrian bridges and the free tram that connects it to the other MGM properties, the Luxor Hotel and Mandalay Bay. In 2007 the Excalibur undertook a major project to remodel and update all of its 2000 rooms with contemporary furnishings and plasma screen TVs. All rooms are also equipped with air conditioning, telephones with voice mail, desk and pay per view movies.

Las Vegas Unemployment Hits 10 Percent

The unemployment rate in Las Vegas hit 10 percent in January making it the highest percentage of unemployment since 1983.

The statewide unemployment rate was 9.4 percent, up from 8.4 percent in December. Nevada’s unemployment numbers continues to surpass the national average, which was 7.6 percent in January.

“Nevada’s employers scaled back jobs by nearly 60,000 in January from the same month a year ago. Job losses are broad based, but a few sectors are absorbing significant losses. For instance, construction employment is down by 20,100, leisure and hospitality is down by 19,000, and professional and business service employment is down by 10,800 over the year,” said William Anderson, cheif economist for the Nevada epartment of Employment, Training & RehabilThere are more than 106,000 unemployment claims being filed every week. The state unemployment trust fund is also in danger of running out of money and may have to start borrowing from the federal government by the end of the year.

Believe it or not, Las Vegas offers some of the very best rock climbing in the USA. Situated on the western border of the city limits is where you will find Red Rock Canyon which offers hundreds of sport and traditional climbing routes. Although you can climb year round, Spring and Fall are the ideal periods due to the cooler weather.

It is important to remember, even though Las Vegas does not get too much precipitation, the sandstone in Red Rock Canyon becomes brittle and weak when wet. It is a good idea to wait a day or two to allow the rock to dry.
